Direct and Indirect Speech

Direct and Indirect Speech What is Direct and Indirect Speech? Direct (or primary) and indirect (or secondary) speeches are two types of spoken language that differentiate one another in meaning. It is easy to confuse them, since they are not exactly synonymous. While directness refers to speaking directly and being informative or straight forward, indirectness means the speaker has changed subject, changed topic, or discussed something differently. For instance, if we say "She is talking" but don't mean to, we're describing someone talking, not her talking. When you're learning an accent or using different methods of communication for everyday situations, it's helpful to know which method of speech you'll be using to convey your message. the aged mother

Pre-reading Reading Once there lived at the foot of a mountain a poor farmer and his aged, widow mother. They owned a bit of land that supplied them with food. They both led a happy, peaceful and humble life. Shinano, the town where they lived, was governed by a despotic leader who though a warrior, had a great and cowardly shrinking from anything suggestive of failing health and strength. This caused him to send out a cruel proclamation. The entire province was given strict orders to immediately put to death all the aged people. The days were barbarous, and the act of abandoning old people to die in isolation was not strange. The poor farmer had immense love and reverence for his aged mother and the order filled his heart with sorrow. No one could even think to refuse to obey the mandate of the governor. With many a deep and hopeless sighs, the youth prepared for the kindest mode, he could kill his mother with. At twilight, when his day's work ended, he took a quantity of unwhite

My Favourite Book There are many historical books in the world. They have been written by great writers and philoso phers of the world. But the book which I like very much is the Holy Quran. It is the book of Allah. It was revealed to the last prophet of Allah, Muhammad (SAW). It is the last message of God Almighty to mankind. It is in Arabic language. It has thirty parts, 114 chapters and 6666 verses. Quran is my favourite book. I recite it daily after Fajar prayer. Thousands of people recite it day and night. It shows us the right path. It leads us to hea- ven. It is full of knowledge and wisdom. It tells us many facts about prophets and their followers. It orders us to pray five times a day. It tells us to be kind to everyone. It tells us the rights and duties. It directs us to worship Allah alone. It orders us to be- lieve in the oneness of God and the last prophet hood of Muhammad (SAW). Quran is the most authentic, pure and perfect book. Its every word is safe since its revelati
