1.Mercury and the Wood Cutter

Once a wood cutter was cutting a tree on the bank of a river. By chance his axe fell in to the river. He searched for it but in vain. The poor wood cutter felt sad and sorry, because the same axe was his source of income. Suddenly the god mercury appeared. Mercury asked the wood cutter why he was so sad. The wood cutter narrated the whole story. Mercury was moved. He at once dived into the water and brought out a golden axe. The woodcutter refused to take it. He again dived and brought out a silver axe. The wood cutter refused it too. The Mercury dived for the third time and brought out an iron axe, seeing his axe the wood cutter was filled with delight. The god Mercury was so pleased with his honesty that he gave him the other two axes as a reward for his honesty.

Moral: Honesty is the Best Policy.

2.A farmer and his three sons

Once upon a time there lived a farmer in a village. He had three sons. They used to quarrel with one another, the farmer always advised them not to quarrel, but it was all in vain. This pained him very much. At last he fell ill. He thought his end was near. He sent for his sons. When they came, he ordered them to bring a bundle of sticks and told them to break it. They tried one by one but failed. The father then told them to untie the sticks and ask them to break each stick separately. Each broke the stick easily. The farmer then advised them that if they were united, no one would harm them. This has a good effect on them and they began to live peacefully. 

Moral:- Union is strength.


3.Greed for Gold

One upon a time three friends were set out on a long journey. They promised to stand by one another through thick and thin. After a day's journey they found a bag a full of gold.They were filled with delight. They decided to divide it equally among themselves. Really each of them wished to have all the gold by himself. They were feeling hungry. They sent one of them to fetch food. It his absence, the other two decided to kill him on his return and divide the gold between themselves. The third friend was not less greedy than other two. He mixed some poison in the food. When he came they put him to death. Then they ate the food and were died on the spot. 

Moral:- 1. As you sow, so shall you reap.

2. Greed is a curse.
